Ginger Colorado

In these trying times, what the world needs most of all is love.

Failing that, how about numbing the pain with a cocktail I invented recently on a trip into the French countryside?

Near the small town of Rustrel lies a park called Colorado Provençal, where the earth is fiery orange and the sun beats down from an azure sky. Where better to enjoy the world and work up a thirst?

After we got back, I made a pitcher of what might be called a poor man’s Cosmopolitan, but then hit on a recipe inspired by the classic Port in a Storm that we all decided should be preserved for posterity (or at least so that we can recall the ingredients, should we drink too many).

And so the Ginger Colorado was born.

Ingredients

  • The best tequila you can find
  • Polish or Russian vodka (I like Wyborowa or Stolichnaya for their clean taste)
  • Ginger beer (ideally Bundaberg’s excellent version)
  • Angostura bitters
  • Limes
  • Plenty of ice

Method

Take a tumbler and add several ice cubes. Add two parts tequila to one part vodka. Fill the glass nearly to the brim with ginger beer and add a dash of bitters. Take two lime quarters, squeeze into the glass and then drop in the quarters. Stir vigorously and serve.

Enjoy!
